Corn Earworm on Legume Vegetables
Return to insects
Corn earworm (Heliocoverpa zea) is a cosmopolitan pest of many types of vegetables. It is an occasional pod feeder of legumes. Earworms vary in color (including yellowish-green, red, and brownish-black) and have a brown head without conspicuous markings. They have numerous microscopic spines covering their body and feel rough to the touch. Earworms chew holes in pods, and are more of a risk late in the season.

Corn earworm larvae also feed on bean pods.

Management:
- Monitor for larvae and watch for damage when picking; use insecticides for control only as needed.
